How To Comfort Someone Who Is Sick

How do you care or even talk to someone who is seriously ill or sick? The most important thing to remember when someone you know or care about is that they are in pain and uncomfortable, both emotionally and physically. Your attention should be focused on what they need.

A great way to open a discussion, if you want to talk about how they feel, is "I would like to make you feel better somehow. Let's think together to see how I can be more helpful and if there is something I can do to make you feel better somehow.

Although it may be hard for your relative or friend answer you at least they will know that you are trying the best you can.  After all, most of us are taught not to burden others with our problems, especially when we are sick and we don't want to feel like cry babies. It also may surprise you to know that, most often, what the sick person actually needs most is for someone to listen and to know that you actually care, thereby sharing the burden of their suffering.

When people get sick they get cut off from their daily life so a note or a phone call from someone reminds them that they are still part of something, part of the community and that they are remembered and cared for. Dealing with relatives and friends that are very sick in not easy and especially when their condition is always changing from day to day. You want to know what to say to them to make them feel better or the cheer them up.

Ask if they would like to be in touch with someone you know who had the same illness. Help them to see that they may grow even stronger through experiencing this illness.

Is it ok to ask questions?
Is it better to ignore the whole matter and act as if nothing serious has happened? Do you pray with them? Do you tell them about your own experiences with something similar? Should you ask them for the details of their condition?

If you are curious about the details of their situation, ask them if they feel like talking about it, rather then proceeding with twenty questions that may make them feel uncomfortable.

Illness carries with it a hole gamut of feelings: anger, fear, grief, sadness, disappointment, hopelessness, perhaps guilt or even shame. What is important is that the person who is ill not lose his or her dignity. Healing the body is linked with healing the soul and it is the soul that also suffers when people do not treat them as important parts of the community or family just because they are sick.

Not everyone is a good listener and has the capabily of expressing deep emotions. Some people actually feel really uncomfortable around sick or very ill people. What if you are one of those people? The worst thing you can do is ignore the situation or change the subject. This will make them feel that you do not care about them and make them feel that they are a burden to you and that they make you feel uncomfortable. There is nothing that feels worse then when someone you love isn't there when you need them most. And in life, the times when you actually need someone most is when you are sick.

It it normal to not know what to do, sometimes even feel guilty because you are well and the person you care about is sick and that there is nothing you can do about it. You feel helpless. For the person who is ill, the emotional pain is often worse then the physical pain, but feeling isolated, or ostracized, which is different from wanting to be alone, can make an illness worse.

If you want to lift someone's spirits visiting someone in the hospital or a person that is homebound is a great idea but not if they feel that they have to entertain you or fix themselves up in anticipation of your visit, which usually causes them unneeded stress and takes away their energy.

Be sure when you visit someone who is sick or very ill, that you pay attention and stay in "tune" to how they are feeling and how they are reacting to your visit and your company. Better to leave while your relative or friend has energy than to exhaust them so that they need to recover from your visit.
